Acknowledging the Birmingham BRC

Hands pointing at laptop screen

All publications (including conference posters) that have an author who is affiliated to the BRC must acknowledge the BRC in author affiliations, funding and by a disclaimer.

If acknowledgements are omitted, this means your publication will not be included as an output in the returns to the NIHR which are part of the contractual reporting process. If in doubt, please contact the Birmingham BRC team for advice.

Author affiliation

For the author affiliation, please reference the BRC as follows, in addition to any organisations where you hold full or honorary contracts.

National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre, UK

Acknowledgment and disclaimer

A statement should be incorporated within the acknowledgements of publications and other disseminations of research results following studies undertaken at the BRC.

Instances where the research received majority funding from the BRC:

“This study/research is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”

Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received.

Instances where the research was funded by another funder but delivered
through the BRC:

“[Research funder statement] This study has been delivered through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the [name of the research funder], the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”

Instances where there are funder details and/or word count restrictions AND the research was funded by another funder but delivered through the BRC:

“The research was carried out at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).”

Please also email the final draft of a publication to the team so that the acknowledgements can be checked prior to submission. Please note that the NIHR does not fund or support animal research so publications from research which is purely animal based should not acknowledge the NIHR.

NIHR Open Access Policy

As a publicly funded research body, the NIHR requires authors to make outputs from its research publicly available. This allows evidence from NIHR funded research to be freely accessed and used across the health and social care system, empower patients and the public, and drive further innovation globally. Please make sure you comply with the NIHR Open Access policy and refer to their website for any updates on their publishing policy.
