Bio

Dr Zania Stamataki is an immunologist with expertise in liver inflammation and viral infection. She is Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy and an Intermediate Career Fellow in Viral and Autoimmune Hepatitis funded by the Medical Research Foundation (UKRI).

Dr Stamataki’s team has discovered the new biological process of enclysis, and is targeting cell-in-cell structures to develop medicine for patients with inflammatory liver diseases and liver cancer, such as Andrea Colvile. Dr Stamataki leads the Virology section of the Horizon Europe-funded SUPREME consortium, which aims to develop sustainable nanoparticle-based antimicrobials. Dr Stamataki is passionate about developing others and co-leads work packages on Communications and Leadership Development of the Wellcome-funded Access to Success Pathways for Inclusive Research Excellence (ASPIRE) award. She writes for The Conversation, the Guardian and other popular press, podcasts and broadcast media on behalf of the British Society of Immunology and the Royal Society, and she is teaching on graduate and undergraduate programmes in viral and liver immunology.
