Research theme

Oral, intestinal and systemic health

People involved

Professor Tariq Iqbal

Oral, Intestinal and Systemic Health Theme Lead

Status: Ongoing

Since 2021 and in collaboration with Hofmann La Roche we have set up a large cohort of adult patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) who have been extensively phenotyped at diagnosis (before treatment). To date, this cohort comprises more than 400 newly diagnosed patients.

Project aims

This cohort feeds directly into the aims of the theme, while also providing biosamples for separate projects investigating galectins and macrophage function in IBD – again in collaboration with Hofmann La Roche. Early data regarding differences in baseline (pre-treatment) intestinal microbiome in patients with ulcerative colitis needing treatment escalation within a year compared to those doing well on simple first line treatment have led to a proposal for the HALT-Colitis trial, which is being developed with the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit.
