Associate Professor in Steroid Metabolism and Signalling

Bio

As an Associate Professor in Steroid Metabolism and Signalling at the University of Birmingham, Dr Rowan Hardy has built on a successful Versus Arthritis Early Career Development Fellowship to establish himself as a leader in the fields of steroid metabolism, inflammation, and in vivo models of chronic inflammatory disease.

His research group investigates the roles of myeloid and mesenchymal steroid metabolism and signalling in driving inflammatory disease and its systemic complications in muscle and bone, with the aim of identifying novel strategies to improve the safety profile of therapeutic glucocorticoids. This work involves world-leading national and international collaborations, including partnerships across multiple centres of excellence at the University of Birmingham, such as the MRC/Versus Arthritis Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research (CMAR) and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Birmingham. Dr Hardy’s long-term ambition is to develop a fully interdisciplinary research programme that redefines the fundamental role of glucocorticoids and steroid metabolism in human health and disease.
